Ukdiche Modak is generally called as Steamed Modak which are favourites of Lord Ganesha. On the ouspicious occasion of Ganpati festival we offer ukdicha modak as a tasty treat. It is a sweet rice dumpling which is filled by cocunut and jaggery mixture.
INGREDIENTS FOR UKDICHE MODAK
1 cup of rice flour
1 grated coconut
1/2 cup of jaggery
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon of cardamom powder
2 tbsp of ghee
1 cup of water
2 teaspoon of sugar
WHAT ARE MODAKS?
Modaks are delicious Maharastrian cuisine specially prepared during ganesh festival. They are offered to Lord ganesha during this festival. There are different types of modaks like Ukdiche Modak, Desicated Modak, Fried Modak.
These modaks are very delicious and most loved by kids and adults. They are generally prepared within maharastrian family.
How to Prepare Ukdiche Modak?
Ukdiche means steamed modak. Generally 21 Modaks are prepared which are offered to Lord Ganesha. It is very trick to prepare this as it requires lot of experience. You can easily prepare it with mouldings.
For Ukdiche Modak you have to prepare first the stuffing. The stuffing is made from grated coconut, jaggery, cardamom powder and some chopped nuts.The rice flour is called as Pithi in Marathi. You can get this in the market or you can prepare at home.
Stuffing of Modak
Grate the whole coconut and set aside. Then finely chop the jaggery and mix it with the grated coconut.
Take 2 tbsp of ghee and heat it for 5 minutes. Put the cocunut and heat it for 5 minutes and add the jaggery. Slowly the jaggery would melt so stir it oftenly.
Turn off the gas and keep aside to let it cool so it gets thicken after cooling.
Outer cover of modak
For making the cover of Modak, take a warm water and heat it for 2 minutes. Put a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon of ghee or oil inside it.
Put 2 teaspoon of sugar inside it.
Put the rice flour inside the water and heat it for 5 minutes and continuosly stir it. This process is called as Ukad in Marathi.
Take some water and oil to soften the dough.
Place some oil and water on your palms so that the small rolls can easily be prepared.
Make small rolls of it and start pressing it from inside. Make the end of rolls thin so that the plates can be easily made.
Fill the stuffing inside it and bring together all edges and remove the extra dough from the top. Press the plates properly so that it will not open or get dry.
After preparing it put the whole modak once inside the warm water so that it will not open from the end.
These Modaks are handmade also you can make it with the mouldings.They are easily available in the markets and nearby shops.
These modaks are made from mouldings which gives perfect shape and looks delicious. The ukdiche modak are ready to serve. They can stay for good amount of days but have them after steaming inside a microwave or a pan.
