Are you planning a spiritual getaway from Mumbai? Let me share my peaceful and powerful 2-day experience at the Gajanan Maharaj Temple in Shegaon, Maharashtra — a journey filled with blessings, devotion, and divine energy.

Day 1: Train Journey from Mumbai to Shegaon on Gajanan Maharaj Pragatdin
By the grace of Gajanan Maharaj, I unknowingly booked my train ticket to Shegaon on the auspicious occasion of Gajanan Maharaj Pragatdin, the day when Maharaj revealed his divine presence to the world. The festival is widely celebrated, and devotees from all over India gather to seek his blessings.
Our train journey from Mumbai to Shegaon took around 5 hours. Upon arrival, we checked into a nearby hotel with a spacious double bed room — conveniently located close to the temple. The atmosphere was already vibrant, filled with chants and energy from thousands of visiting devotees.

First Impressions of the Gajanan Maharaj Temple: Cleanliness & Devotion
The first thing that struck us about the Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan Temple was its immaculate cleanliness and remarkable discipline. Despite the massive crowd, everything was organized with utmost care. The temple premises had accommodation facilities for devotees, completely free of cost, although they were fully occupied due to the pragatdin.
We joined the long but steady queue for darshan, which took us around two hours to reach the sanctum. During this wait, the air was filled with the soulful sounds of the Gajanan Maharaj Aarti and devotional songs. It was a magical, goosebump-inducing experience.

Divine Kakad Aarti and Blessings at the Sanctum
Just as we reached near the idol of Maharaj, the Kakad Aarti began — a divine moment that felt like a personal blessing for our family. Photography is not allowed inside the temple, but the beautiful architecture and historical aura speak for themselves. The temple’s rich heritage is maintained beautifully by the Sansthan.

This darshan was especially meaningful for me as I was preparing to leave India and move to Canada. I visited Shegaon to seek Gajanan Maharaj’s blessings before beginning a new chapter in my life. I strongly believe in his teachings and that he will guide me through tough times.
An Unforgettable Langar Experience: Free Meals as Prasad
Another divine experience was the Annapurna Bhojnalaya, where unlimited food thalis are served for both lunch and dinner — completely free of cost. The food is offered as prasad and is cooked and served by dedicated volunteers and staff. It’s not just about the food, but the spirit of community and devotion that makes this part so special.

Dhyan Mandir and Traditional Processions
Just opposite the main temple lies the Dhyan Mandir, where silence is maintained for meditation and prayer. The tranquil environment helps you connect deeply with Maharaj.
Outside the temple, we witnessed a vibrant Marathi folk dance performance. A group of devotees had walked with the Gajanan Maharaj Palkhi from a distant location, singing bhajans and dancing in joy — showcasing the cultural richness and faith of Maharaj’s followers.
Savoring the Famous Shegaon Kachori and Souvenirs
After completing the 4.5-hour darshan, we couldn’t resist trying the famous Shegaon kachori — crispy, spicy, and absolutely delicious! Before leaving, I also purchased idols of Gajanan Maharaj and Swami Samarth as souvenirs to set up in my home temple in Canada.
Day 2: Exploring Maharaj’s Life and Miracles

On the second day, we visited various spiritual landmarks in Shegaon related to Maharaj’s life, including the places where he lived and meditated. The walls of the temple complex beautifully depict the story of his Pragatdin, his miracles, and the life-changing teachings he shared with his followers, especially children.

On the second day of our Shegaon visit, we went to the sacred Bankat Sadan, a historically significant place where Gajanan Maharaj resided during his time in Shegaon. This humble dwelling has now been preserved as a holy site by the temple trust. It is said that Maharaj performed many of his spiritual activities and miracles here. As we stepped into Bankat Sadan, we could feel an unexplainable calm and divine energy. The walls are adorned with pictures and stories describing how Maharaj spent his time here — guiding devotees, performing miracles, and teaching values of selflessness, faith, and devotion. For any true devotee of Swami, visiting Bankat Sadan in Shegaon is a soul-stirring and emotional experience that deepens the connection with Maharaj.
